Did you (or your Significant Other) forget to make dinner reservations for Valentine’s Day? Too difficult to get a babysitter? Waiting for the weekend? No worries – you can still enjoy a date night in.
If you have kids, try to run them around all day long so they are super tired and get to bed by 7. I know it may not always work, but even if they have quiet time while you and the S.O. cook and prep, you can enjoy the rest of the night together (until someone cries for you).
Nick and I have pretty much done Valentine’s date night in for the past 6 years. We typically make surf and turf, our favorite wine or prosecco, break out the good dishes (any excuse to use my Swarovski champagne flutes and Noritake Cirque plates) and end with some strawberries and chocolate.
In order to make the perfect Valentine date night in, keep the expectations low. That’s right, expect that one of the kids will wake up, or something will overcook – because then when it does happen, you can laugh, brush it off and try to get back to the night once you take care of it.
A great way to be romantic without being cheesy and over-the-top is to cook together. Helping each other out and creating something together to enjoy really sets the mood. Prepare a simple table setting, but with the fancy dishes. Add flowers to the table and the wine bottle(s).
Nick loves a good rib eye, and I am a seafood gal. I made my Maryland-style crab cakes, and he did the rib eyes (recipes here), along with some “zoodles” and garlic bread.
If you don’t have time to do surf and turf (exhausted from work and/or worried the kids will wake up or already have), make an easy roasted red pepper pesto with a dollop of ricotta cheese. Easy ingredients and takes 9 minutes – plus works out great if you aren’t eating meat!
And if you really don’t have time, order a heart-shaped pizza, get the champagne, and watch your favorite movie, eat by candlelight or run a bubble bath. Whatever you end up doing, put the phones down (after the Instagram pics of course), enjoy the moment, and just be together.
Hope you enjoy your date night in! Happy Valentine’s Day!
